The 54-year-old actress recently admitted that her bedroom has become a “sanctuary” because the simple act of moving is often too agonizing.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021, she spends a significant portion of her day in bed, only pushing herself to leave for the sake of her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie.

Applegate revealed that driving her daughter to school is the “only time” they have alone together. She revealed that her internal monologue is a constant struggle to just get home safely so she can collapse back into bed.

Being confined to her room has given her the unfiltered freedom to write her new memoir, “You With the Sad Eyes.“ The book dives into her tumultuous upbringing in Laurel Canyon, where she witnessed her mother’s struggle with substance use and troubled relationships.

She recalled the instability of her childhood, noting how “fun” it was to see her mother “crying on the floor” while she was left to fend for herself. Even after finding fame as Kelly Bundy, she stayed in an unhealthy relationship because she felt the need to fix broken people.

On August 26, 2025, Applegate and fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler sat down for an episode of their podcast, “MeSsy,” where Applegate did not hold back.

“Well, of course. And I mean, in my situation, Sadie only knew me as healthy. You know, a runner, a pellotoner, a dancer,” she shared in response to Sigler noting how their kids often observe them with a keen eye and worry about them. “So then, when this came about, 2021, [sic] she was like stoic about it.” But that stoic shell began to crack.”I see her look at me when I’m in bed and can’t quite move, or I wanna go say goodnight to her in her room, but I can’t quite get down the hallway for whatever reason that my legs aren’t working that day,” she continued, her voice thick with emotion.

Right now, I can barely get to the bathroom; it’s the worst, but that’s neither here nor there. But, I just — it’s broken her, you know? And she didn’t know this.”

And it’s only getting harder. “It was like losing the mom she had to this [expletive] thing. And the more she’s gotten older now, I think the more it’s hurting her,” Applegate divulged, painting a haunting picture of a teen silently grieving the mother she once knew.
