Can You Shower While the Washing Machine Is Running? Here’s What You Should Know

You’re standing under a perfectly warm shower, half awake and enjoying those first few minutes of peace, when suddenly the water pressure drops. A moment later, the temperature changes, and your relaxing shower becomes a little less relaxing.

Down the hall, the washing machine has just started filling.

Coincidence? Not necessarily!

When you run the shower and washing machine at the same time, both can draw water from your home’s plumbing system. Depending on how your pipes, water heater, and fixtures are configured, you might notice a change in water pressure, temperature, or both.

The good news? In most homes, showering while the washing machine runs is perfectly fine. You generally don’t need to worry about damaging your plumbing simply because both are operating at once.

However, there are a few things worth understanding, especially if your shower suddenly turns cold whenever the laundry starts.

Why the Shower Changes Temperature When the Washer Runs

Your home’s plumbing supplies water to multiple fixtures and appliances. When the washing machine begins filling, it creates an additional demand on the water supply.

If your plumbing has limited flow capacity, both fixtures may receive less water than they would if used separately.

That’s when you might notice a weaker shower, an unexpected temperature change, or both.

The Washing Machine Can Reduce Water Pressure

Imagine your home’s water supply as a road with several lanes carrying water to different destinations.

When the shower is running by itself, most of the available flow is going to that fixture. When the washing machine starts filling, it draws water through the same supply system.
